Where: Palm Grove, Darling Harbour (under the freeway near the IMAX theatre)

Other Details:
The Boat Building Competition will take place in Palm Grove, Darling Harbour at the designated time.
Awards in each category will be made in accordance with a predetermined set of criteria. Judges will be appointed and will incorporate both SBA professionals and non-SBA personnel.
All contestants must agree, understand and abide by the rules as set out in the following:
Contestants Rules
1. The boat must be designed to row (or paddle) and sail.
2. Boats, paddles, oars, spars, etc. must be built from materials provided.
3. Contestants must supply their own hand tools. Battery powered tools will be supplied. No other power tools permitted (e.g. petrol chainsaws, air-driven tools, etc).
4. Each team is comprised of two members who must also operate the craft for the on-water part of the contest.
5. Plans and cardboard templates are allowed.
6. Sails are supplied and must be lashed to spars, not nailed.
7. Saw horses and / or portable worktables are permitted.
8. Minimum beam is to be 900mm.
9. Contestants will be awarded points by following all OH&S regulations.
10. Maximum construction time for teams is to be two hours, on plastic sheeting provided (3m x 4m).
11. When construction time lapses no further work is to be carried out. Participants will be given time updates throughout the competition.
12. After completion of boat, teams from yards may paint yard name on boat. Paint to be supplied by competitors. Tools should be packed away directly after construction. Boats remain in construction area until prior to water event for judging and public approval. No inappropriate language or signage is to be used on the boats.
13. On-water event: a course map for the race will be provided during the briefing and should be adhered to.
14. Sponsorship. This is a BIA and SBA sponsored event. Our partner sponsors for the event will be advised.
15. Awards will be announced after the on-water event in the same location as the boat building. Prize giving to take place from 6.30 p.m. Participants and members will be advised of the venue.
16. Participants are personally responsible for their own tools, clothing equipment, etc.
17. Approved PFDs will be supplied to each team for each team member racing in the on-water component of the competition.
18. No tools in boats for on-water event.
19. Bailers are permitted.
20. Contestants will be disqualified if they sink other boats or participants prior to completion of the race.
21. The Competitors can bring along an extra component for use in the vessel, NOT A COMPLETE HULL. Eg: Transom, paddle or centreboard etc.
22. Competition area must be cleaned up by competitors at end of build and race
Materials provided to build your boat
1. Sikaflex 241 as required (dispensing gun not supplied).
2. Abrasives, disposable gloves, masking tape.
3. Two (2) sheets of 4mm hoop pine ply wood and one sheet of 12mm CD ply.
4. Four x 2.4m x 25mm x 25mm DAR Pine.
5. Four x 2.4 x 25 x 50 RAD Pine.
6. Two x 2.4 x 100 x 25 RAD Pine.
7. Two x 3000 x 50 x 50 RAD Pine.
8. 250g of serrated nails x 25mm long.
9. 150 x 19mm x 8g AND 150 x 50 mm x 8g, C/S Phillips chip board screws.
10. One x 150 x 25 x 2.4 of Pine
11. One 2400 x 1200 triangular sailcloth (3.9 oz) with 6 eyelets (to be returned in clean condition).
12. One 25m length of 6 mm rope.
Judging
The event will be judged as stipulated above and be performed by a pre-selected panel.
Company identification
Participants must wear the team t-shirt provided. Companies can be identified on your boat or other clothing not covered by the t-shirt.
Times
There may be slight variations to start and finishing times but as a guide the following times are relevant.
Meet and briefing - 9.30am
Build start - 10.00am
Build end - 12.00 noon
Lunch and race briefing - 1.00pm
Race commences - 2.30pm
Other Details
The Boat Building Competition will take place in Palm Grove, Darling Harbour at the designated time.
The paddling / sailing race will take place on Cockle Bay. Teams will be briefed in relation to the course on the day.
Please make sure you bring a change of clothes and dress for the weather. Remember, you will have to wear a team t-shirt.
Teams will consist of SBA members (except for interstate or overseas teams), total of two persons per team.
All participants will adhere to the BIA NSW Occupational Health & Safety Policy & Rules. In particular, participants are not allowed to consume alcohol or other substances that may impact on safety. The judges reserve the right to exclude anyone whom they believe is intoxicated or otherwise affected in their capacity to compete.
Judges decision will be final, and no correspondence will be entered into.
