2004 Sydney International Boat Show
press release...
Harbouring the Dream
21st July 2004
Every year the Sydney Boat Show plays host to thousands of boat lovers. Most of whom recognise that the best way to enjoy Sydney Harbour is to actually get out on the water. Trouble is, most of us can only do this very occasionally or not at all on a luxury cruiser. Even those of us who can afford it are normally people who are time poor. The result is that those gleaming pleasure craft sit unused on the marina most of the time but still cost big maintenance dollars. A recent survey reports that most private boats are used for only 18 to 21 days a year.
At this years Sydney Boat Show, more people than ever will be going home the proud owners of a luxury cruiser thanks to The Cruising Club, who will be showing 6 fractional ownership boats at the show.
In 1998 boating enthusiast Mark Cairney made the sea change and moved back to Sydney, after a decade of working as a high flying executive in the US and UK.
"Adopting the principles of well known products such as racehorse syndication and resort timesharing, it seemed to me that there had to be a more cost effective way to own a boat that would allow more people to indulge in this relaxing pastime" says Mark. "I decided to provide a way for people to own a luxury motor launch for just the time they needed it, through the purchase of a meaningful equity share in the vessel".
The Cruising Club offers different levels of equity ranging from 7% equity up to 50% ownership, with exclusive use of the selected vessel from between 21 and 156 days per year.
"The Commercial Vessels Act 1979" Mark continues, "specifies that, provided you can provide valid proof of ownership equity, the requirements for using a boat that you do not own - to be built to survey and operate as a registered charter vessel - are not applicable. It is your boat, not somebody else's. As a result we are able to offer a stunning range of luxury private motor cruisers on a shared equity basis".
The entry cost is a once off purchase of equity in your selected boat, is from $19,890 for full membership and use of the cruiser for 21 days a year. An ongoing annual maintenance contribution is also payable by each equity owner. There are also in excess of 70 additional standby days available each year allowing owners to access additional time on their boat, on a last minute, as-available basis.
Each member submits a list of preferred daily booking dates up to four months prior to each four month boating season, which are allocated by preference or, in the event of multiple applications, by ballot and confirmed in writing by the management company.
Each selected boat is fully maintained all year round, ready for member's use every day. Regular mechanical upkeep, antifouling, insurance, marina rental, valet service, management and refurbishment are carried out by the appointed vessel management company. A comprehensive driver training course and skills test is included with each membership application.
The luxury cruisers on offer at the Show will include manufacturers such as Princess, Fairline, Regal and Sunrunner. The largest fractional boat on show will be the stunning Fairline Squadron 55 Flybridge Cruiser.
"The Cruising Club fractional boat ownership programs, allows a millionaires lifestyle on a fisherman's budget', says Mark Cairney, Managing Director of The Cruising Club.
