Sydney International Boat Show 2006

The new Radford 12m performance cruising yacht built by Shekinah Boat Works, Taree, NSW, is a distinctive and highly recognisable yacht which stands out from the norm of currently available production yachts.

The first of these contemporary Australian production yachts was built for the designer, Graham Radford, and features an un-stayed carbon fibre cat rig developed in conjunction with Tom Wylie at Wyliecat, San Francisco. Graham Radford says “This type of rig is offered for those who want to enjoy sailing with a minimum of fuss. To go sailing, simply remove the sail cover; hoist the sail; adjust the downhaul, choker and sheet; and away you go. When you’re finished sailing for the day, just drop the halyard and the sail is immediately captured by the lazy jacks on the wishbone.”

The designer’s yacht will have a 2.1m draft cruising keel. “We are preparing the yacht so that we can do harbour and short offshore racing plus weekend and coastal cruising”.

The interior is light and airy, softened by the vinyl headliner; silver ash cupboard fronts and trim; Marinedeck 2000 cork cabin sole and jazzy upholstery, to give a casual feel to the interior. The yacht has loads of stowage for short to medium term cruising.

Look out for the easily recognisable cat rig at the Sydney International Boat Show and on Sydney Harbour this coming sailing season.

The R12m has a range of options to appeal to different areas of the yachting market.

Options include three different rigs and keels. There is a large fractional rig for racing; a smaller fractional rig for the short-handed cruising couple or the very interesting cat rig. Keel options include a lifting keel; a 2.45m deep draft or a 2.1m draft cruising keel. The accommodation layout will vary depending on the rig and keel selection.
