Oceantalk Fights Crime on Our Waterways
24th June 2003

Boat owners around Australia are only too well aware of the need for security, particularly with boats on moorings well away from shore or in lightly populated areas.

Now, Oceantalk Australia, a major distributor of marine electronics, has come up with a system to help boat owners rest easier.

Visitors to the Oceantalk display at the Sydney International Boat Show will no doubt find interest in and take comfort from the 'Ship to Shore' system developed by the company.

Before this development, boat owners had little in the way of options to protect their vessel.

Only run of the mill automotive and home alarms, neither of which are suitable for boats, were available.

The Oceantalk system has been specifically designed for power and sailing craft.

It is an innovative and flexible monitoring system with a sophisticated transmitter that links with the GSM mobile phone network.

When an alarm situation occurs the system sounds and audible alarm and actually informs the boat owner what is happening aboard the vessel.

This is achieved via an SMS text message to the owner's mobile phone or to an alternative mobile if required.

The innovative system has the ability to notify a boat owner, via the detailed SMS text message, of a range of situations, including illegal entry, vessel theft, flooding, fire, LPG gas leaks, on board power or engine management systems failure.

It can also inform the owner when the system is armed or disarmed, even allowing tradesmen working on the vessel to be timed for audit billing charges.

Another unique feature of the Ship to Shore system is its versatile two-way communication.

Using a mobile phone, an owner can send a command to the unit using SMS text ordering it to switch on appliances such as air conditioning, refrigeration, heating or generators.

It allows essential functions to be carried out without the owner needing to be on board.

Like a mobile phone, the system uses a SIM card to connect to the GSM network.

Oceantalk Australia developed a package with Vodaphone that reduces the running costs for the owner and offers a higher level of security.

All SMS text messages are sent via a separate server that is dedicated for security data.

This means that the transmission times are not affected by delays experienced in the public networks.

For boat owners, the Ship to Shore Security System offers a whole new way of managing and protecting vessels, without undue hassles and expense.

It also provides owners with the peace of mind knowing that if something is amiss they will have the means to take immediate and effective action.
